Networking for people who hate networking
The transactional version deserves the cringe. The working version is specific curiosity plus light bookkeeping, and introverts are often better at it.

What is happening
Strip networking of its costume and it is three moves: ask a specific person a specific question they are well placed to answer; make the interaction cost them almost nothing; and keep enough notes to honour the thread later. That is the whole machine.
"Can I pick your brain" fails all three: unspecific, unbounded, and forgettable. "You moved from audit to data in 2024; what did you have to unlearn?" succeeds at all three in one sentence.
Why it matters
What this means for you
What to do
- Two specific questions to two relevant people per month. Sustainable and compounding beats a burst of fifty connection requests.
- Close every thread with the outcome: people who learn their advice was used become advocates; advice into the void becomes a reason to ignore you.
- Keep a ten-line ledger: who, when, what was said, what you owe. Memory is not a system.

Working across hierarchy: sungkan without silence
